How do I purchase a private registration?
This process couldn't be easier when you are shopping with Number 1 Plates. Once you have used our search function to find your perfect registration, you can purchase online using our safe and secure payment options. If you would like some help find your reg, or have any questions regarding the process, please feel free to contact email@example.com
Once you have made you purchase, we will do our best to ensure that your entitlement documents are with you within 5 business days, including your number plates if you have selected to have those delivered too.
Do I have to put it on my vehicle right away?
No! This is the great thing about purchasing a number plate as a gift. Once you have paid for the rights to the registration, and the assignment fee (included in our of our list prices) then you have up to 10 YEARS until you have to either assign it to a vehicle, or pay a retention fee and keep hold of it for a little longer.
That being said, you can feel free to assign it to your vehicle right away.
How do I assign this to my vehicle?
If you would like to assign a private registration to your vehicle, whether you have a V750, V778 or an online reference number you need to contact the DVLA. You can assign your new registration by post or by applying online, as long as the vehicle that you are assigning the reg too passes certain criteria. The vehicle must:
- be registered with DVLA in the UK
- be able to move under its own power
- be of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
- have been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years
- be taxed currently (or have a SORN in place - if it's had a SORN for more than 5 years, it must be taxed)
- be available for inspection
DVLA will check your application and contact you if your vehicle needs an inspection.
After you have completed the process and it has been accepted, you will received you new logbook (V5C) which may take 4 to 6 weeks. You must then put new up to date number plates on the vehicle and update your insurance company of the changes.
Can I buy a personalised registration as a gift?
Absolutely! As long as you know the exact full name that is displayed on the recipient vehicle's logbook/registration form then you can purchase the registration in their name. We will dispatch these orders in unbranded packaging just incase it is a surprise.
You or the receiver also doesn't need to own a car to allow you to purchase a registration. With the 10 year rule that we previously mentioned, as long as the name on the V750 that you receive is the same as will be on the vehicle logbook when you/they come to purchase, the registration can be assigned at a later date.
What happens if I change my mind after payment?
Unfortunately, our purchasing service happens directly after you place your order, meaning that the process of assigning the registration to you has already commenced. This means that the bespoke item has already been purchased for you. Therefore, purchases on private registration are non-refundable.
That being said, we can help you if you would like to try and sell your registration onto another buyer. This can help you recover some of the costs, and maybe even make you a little bit of pocket money.
What happens to my registration when I sell my vehicle?
In this situation you would be required put your personalised registration onto retention. There is an £80 retention fee to pay for this service, where you will receive a V778 with your reg on it. When you come to put the reg on your new vehicle, your V778 can be used in the same way that you previously used the V750 that comes when you originally purchased your registration.
Can I make my vehicle look newer than it is?
No! You must keep in mind that you are unable to make your vehicle look newer than it actually is. This means that if your vehicle was manufactured in 2014, you would be unable to assign a registration that displays '15' for the years 2015, for example. If you would like some more information on the age identifiers of certain registrations, then take a look the information on our dateless, prefix & suffix, Irish and private registration plate pages!
